Do You Want A Small Mini-Fridge / Refrigerator or Personal Cooler?

Updated on December 2, 2016

A Mini Fridge -Online?

A mini fridge, personal cooler, travel cooler, or compact refrigerator; call it what you will, this is an item that could be extremely useful to you!

I have a mini travel one and a slightly larger one for the home ~ but both can be used elsewhere, when needed, because they are small enough to move around. The little one can even be powered from the car's engine.

Why Get a Mini Fridge or Portable Cooler?

It was a very hot summer. The fridge was full of the usual items, but I needed a little extra space for cool drinks ~ mineral water and juice ~ and also for some fresh fruit.

I had a look around to see if any small refrigerators were available ~ and, sure enough, they were. I bought my fridge and have considered to to be extremely useful ever since.

But what about when going on holiday?

I had my mini fridge, but it wasn't really 'mini' enough to take camping, so I bought a portable warmer / cooler that could be plugged into mains electricity, or used in the car ~ very useful! (Be careful not to drain the battery!!!)

If you run a guest house, or even if you just have regular house guests, a mini fridge in the bedroom is really useful, and not just a luxury. Guests can keep drinks cool at night ~ or even use the fridge to protect medicines, etc.

And if you are catering for a party, and discover that the venue does not provide refrigeration facilities, then, with a small fridge, it is easy to use your own (provided the venue-owner is ok with this).

'Coca Cola' Fridges / Coolers

'Coca Cola' is probably one of the best-known and most popular drinks in the world.

It has been around for over 100 years and is, apparently, sold in over 200 countries.

The emblem must be recognised pretty much everywhere and can be seen on various items ~ not least coolers!!

Many people believe that, to be truly enjoyed, 'Coca Cola' must be kept cold.

Since wine fridges exist, for those who enjoy a good glass of wine, it is not surprising that 'Coca Cola' fridges should have been introduced, for those who like a refreshing can of 'coke'.

Other 'Coca Cola' novelties are also available.

You can even sit on a 'Coca Cola' bar stool, while you enjoy your favourite beverage!

A Word of Warning - Don't Do What I Did!

Do be very careful when using travel fridges / coolers in your car.

I was taking the kids camping, during their school holidays, so I bought a little red mini fridge. This could be plugged into the mains, or into a car socket (provided we had the correct plugs / wires / adaptors), and I thought that it would prove to be very useful ~ which, indeed, it has. However, at the time, I had not allowed for something that turned out to be a fairly major problem.

We packed up the car, ready to set out. We just needed some nice cold drinks for the journey.

Everyone got in and I drove off, but I stopped at the nearest shops, to purchase mineral water, fruit juice, etc.

We parked for just a few minutes ~ while we decided what we wanted and which shops we would visit.

My portable fridge was plugged in and getting cooler by the minute.

We nipped into the shops and the kids bought their chosen drinks. Then we hurried back to the car, where they placed them in the refrigerator.

I turned the key in the ignition, ready to resume our journey.
Nothing!
I tried again. still nothing.
The engine was dead and I was only a few yards from home.
I called the AA (Automobile Association).

They arrived and told me that my car battery was flat ~ what could have caused that?!

It was the fridge!
It had drained the battery! Already!

I had only parked for a few minutes with the engine running and the fridge plugged in ~ but the battery had not been able to cope with it.

The morals of this story are:
~ Read the instructions carefully.
~ Ensure that your car battery is in good condition, before setting out on long journeys.
~ Do not drain your battery with fridges (or anything else, for that matter - it happened to us, once, in Spain, with the CD player) ~ use it correctly.

As your car drives along, the alternator re-charges the battery, but a weakened battery, or repeated short car journeys, or over-use of in-car electrical items, or ~ especially ~ leaving electrical items running while the car isn't moving, can drain your battery and leave it dead.

Koolatron

Koolatron make a variety of appliances to choose from. Some are novelty items ~ there are the red ones, as described above ~ others are more traditional in style. There are refrigerators / fridges and coolers.

Some can be used in the home; others are useful for car journeys.

The Koolatron company also sells their own 'Koolatron multi-purpose adapter' (110AC to 12 volts DC) and also the 'Koolatron Battery Saver'.
